On the drawing board...
Replacing a substantial homestead lost to bushfire, the Courtyard House draws inspiration from the Roman ‘atrium house’ typology.
A series of connected pavilions are arranged on site to create a sheltered courtyard. At the centre of the courtyard, the ruins of the homestead’s original cellar are transformed into a sunken garden.
The design uses a palette of robust materials including naturally fire-resistant blackbutt, concrete, off-white concrete blocks.
