Located in the former Bank of New South Wales building on the Queen Street Mall, Country Road’s Brisbane flagship store required extensive heritage preservation to maintain the grandeur of the original banking hall while introducing new interventions that allow the space to function as a contemporary retail environment.

A new staircase connects the ground floor with the mezzanine, extending circulation through the double-height volume. Its design references the fine timber battening of the Queenslander, providing a contemporary detail referencing local vernacular. The bank’s ornate plasterwork and stone detailing have been preserved, while new lighting, points of sale, and display units bring warmth and tactility to the interior.

The project demonstrates how careful, minimal insertions can sustain the character of a heritage interior while extending its life through adaptive reuse.
