This project restores and adapts a heritage stair and entry to meet contemporary access and fire-safety requirements.
The original timber stair, a central element of the building’s character, was carefully repaired and restored. To achieve compliance, a new stair was applied over the existing – introducing tactile indicators, updated treads, and handrails, while integrated lighting ensures appropriate illuminance levels.
The design approach preserves the integrity of the original while discreetly layering in the elements needed for safe, ongoing use. This balance of conservation and intervention allows the upper floors to remain accessible, supporting their continued use and future adaptation.
