Shadows

Set on a tiny triangular block in Creswick, Shadows is a meditation on darkness, material and space.

Internally, the house is wrapped in dark-stained plywood, absorbing light and softening reflection. The atmosphere recalls Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows, a place where shadow carries weight and presence.

Two overlapping triangular volumes trace the geometry of the site, enclosing a square courtyard at the rear for an outdoor bath. A carved recess opens to views over the township, while the north-facing courtyard provides a private, sunlit counterpoint to the dark interior.
